SS 304 vs 202 Stainless Steel — Difference, Price & Which to Buy

Confused between 304 and 202 stainless steel? This guide explains the real difference in composition, corrosion resistance, price and uses — so you buy the right grade and never get 202 sold to you as 304.

Short answer: 304 has more nickel and better corrosion resistance (premium, food-grade, outdoor-safe). 202 replaces most nickel with manganese, so it's about 20–25% cheaper but less corrosion-resistant (best indoors/decorative). Choose 304 for durability, 202 for budget indoor work.

Corrosion resistance & durability

The nickel in 304 builds a stronger, self-healing protective layer, so it handles moisture, food acids and outdoor weather much better. 202's lower nickel means it can develop tea-staining or rust spots in humid, coastal or wet conditions. For anything outdoor, near water, or food-related — go 304.

Price — why 202 is cheaper

Nickel is expensive and its price swings daily on the LME. Because 202 uses cheaper manganese instead of most of the nickel, it costs roughly 20–25% less than 304. That saving is real — but only worth it if your application doesn't need 304's corrosion resistance.

The 202-sold-as-304 trapBecause 202 looks almost identical to 304, some sellers pass off cheaper 202 as 304. Protect yourself: buy from an authorised Jindal dealer, insist on the Jindal Saathi Seal showing GRADE 304, and get an invoice stating the grade.

304 vs 202 — FAQ

Which is better, 304 or 202 stainless steel?

304 for corrosion resistance, food-grade and outdoor/wet use. 202 for budget indoor and decorative work. 304 costs more; 202 is ~20–25% cheaper.

How much cheaper is 202 than 304?

Typically about 20–25% cheaper, because 202 replaces most of the expensive nickel with manganese.

How do I make sure I'm not sold 202 as 304?

Buy from an authorised Jindal dealer, insist on the Jindal Saathi Seal with GRADE 304, and get an invoice stating the grade. A strong magnet pull can hint at 202, but the seal and dealer authenticity are the reliable checks.
